HardworkingModern business life is very dynamic and competitive, and in order to achieve success in business, managers need to develop certain professional habits and personal qualities. Such factors as being a hardworking, ambitious person, bold in decision making, striving for receiving immediate results, as well as having great abilities to think critically and the capacity to overwork are among the key traits of modern successful managers of top levels. Working hard is considered a habit of some people, and many of their friends and colleagues call this habit “an addiction”. It is absolutely true, and, as any addiction, this one also requires certain “treatment” and control. Otherwise: have you heard about Karoshi? No, I do not mean a PC game here…

Specialists from the University of Alabama draw the attention of today’s workaholics to the fact that long-term overwork and exhaustion are very dangerous to our physical and mental health. According to the results of their researches, working hard when you feel tired and exhausted is strictly linked to high blood pressure, which usually remains high for many hours, until the work is done. Certainly, such changes in blood pressure have a lot of negative effects on our health and, first of all, they bring to increased risks of having a heart attack or a heart disease. On this background, such problems as headaches and sleep deprivation do not sound too threatening, but they still take place very frequently when people work too hard.

Other researchers underline that overworking leads to nutritional problems and overweight. When you are in the office for days and nights, a cup of tea or coffee, doughnuts and whatever you can grab from the vending machine in the hall are your best friends. Eating junk food, eating on feet and not eating at all during the day result in gastritis, developing various types of ulcers and other serious problems. Another type of “workaholics” (namely, software developers and other PC freaks) sits in front of their computers for days and does not watch what they eat. As a result, poor nutrition combined with sedentary life-style lead to overweight and obesity.

Overwork and exhaustion are really harmful and dangerous to our health. Even when overwork pays back with some extra productivity, it gets us back by adding more health damage, pressure and tension. Medical specialists also underline that this issue should not be a concern of only managers and businessmen. It is not less important for the students, who are overloaded with their homeworks and lessons, or for modern housewives, who have crazy amounts of chores and other activities related to taking care about their families. Do not overestimate your abilities and do not work till you are quite out of breath. Take care about your health and your body, and you’ll live a happy and joyful life without sicknesses and doctors!
