PeachesBreast cancer is one of the most common and aggressive types of cancer, and according to the statistics, about 16% of total number of deaths from cancer are accounted to this one. Scientists and medical specialists around the world are urgently looking for effective solutions and remedies for breast cancer, and recently one of the researches ended up with promising positive results. A group of scientists from Texas AgriLife Research Lab found out that extracts of peaches and plums can destroy breast cancer cells.

For the experiments, some sets of normal and two types of cancer cells were used. After treatment of those cells with extracts of the the “Black Splendor” plum and the “Rich Lady” peach, the scientists were amazed to find out that cancerous cells were totally killed, but normal cells were not hared at all. Dr. David Byrne, AgriLife Research Team leader, comments on the study as the following: “It was a differential effect which is what you’re looking for because in current cancer treatment with chemotherapy, the substance kills all cells, so it is really tough on the body.”

These miraculous properties to induce death of breast cancer cells are attributed to two natural compounds: neochlorogenic and chlorogenic phenolic acids. These two phenols are quite common in many fruits, but peaches, plums and other stone fruit are very rich in this type of phenolic compounds. American scientists from AgriLife Lab are convinced that the power of these phenols to destroy cancer cells are greater than the ones of blueberry extracts, which had been considered the best in this context. The findings of this study were recently published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.
