For centuries, women have been having a tendency to over-report their health problems and go to doctors much more often than men, and even when a woman feels a little sick she prefers to visit her health care specialist to be sure that she receives professional medical help. Today’s women report much more diseases and illnesses, and the scientists are sure that women are really more sick than men, turning into a real ‘sicker sex’. In particular, according to the findings of a group of scientists of the Public Health Agency of Barcelona, women suffer from an increased rates of chronic diseases and especially disturbing health conditions.
The scientist analyzed the information and medical history of over 29,000 people of pretty wide age range whose records were taken from Spain’s 2006 National Health Survey. It turned out that 38.8 per cent of today’s women are convinced that their health is very poor or poor, and only 27 per cent of men consider their health be in this bad condition. At the same time, 25.7 per cent of women reported that they have terrible chronic conditions that limit their normal life activities, compared to only 19.3 per cent of today’s men that reported about too disturbing chronic health conditions.
However, when the researchers looked at the real number of chronic conditions that each of the participants suffer from. On this stage of the study, it became apparent that gender differences play no role when it comes to a person’s health condition. It turned out that modern women actually really have a greater number of chronic conditions than men. That is why in our times, women turned from weaker sex to sicker sex. Moreover, there is a tendency in women to report a better health compared to men in case if they have the same number of health conditions and problems.
Spanish scientists consider that the findings are very important for estimating the role of women in modern society. ‘These results suggest that the poorer self-rated health of women is a reflection of the higher burden of disease they suffer,’ the study leaders underline in the report about their findings. European experts express their concerns about health status of modern women. You can read more about this interesting study and its findings in the latest issue of European Journal of Public Health.
