Centuries ago, people used to spend a full one hour for lunch. But now we are so extremely pressed with our endless problems and stresses, that we do not have time for eating calmly and properly. A new study suggests that modern Brits spend only 39 minutes a day for eating their breakfast, lunch and dinner all together. At that, in average we spend only about 12 minutes and 50 seconds for lunch, about 7 minutes and 20 seconds for breakfast, and our dinner takes in average 19 minutes, that totals about 39 minutes and 20 seconds that we spend for meals on an everyday basis.
Our eating has now turned into a functional routine. We try to fill our stomachs with a sandwich or a toast rather than enjoying our mealtime chatting with friends or family members and taking pleasure from every piece of what we are eating. Moreover, most of us (up to 45 percent of people) go on working or doing various things while eating, so we even do not notice that we’re full and go on eating until we finish the meal. This warning tendency can increase our chances to have extra weight and suffer from obesity, the curse of our times, the experts say.
Also, a great deal of women report skipping meals, especially lunch. This tendency is caused by too busy working days of ours. Certainly, these changes are caused not by our own choices but by the circumstances and our too busy life. As the specialists from President cheese manufacturer’s company, who carried out this research, confirm, 78 percent of the participants admitted that they wished they had more time to properly sit down and enjoy their daily meals. In addition, about 90 percent of people underlined that those rare occasions when they have time for traditional family lunch or dinner, were very enjoyable and helped to feel much better.
‘We now live in a very food-orientated society, where food documentaries, celebrity chefs and cook books have never been more prolific,’ says psychologist Dr Richard Woolfson, who collaborated on the study with the President experts. ‘It is so important to take the time to taste and appreciate food, as this has an effect on our emotional and physical well-being and can affect our productivity.’ It is essential to pay attention on how we eat, take time for eating and develop proper eating habits. I agree on that. Now days, no one has time to relax and chat comfortably with friends, be it while eating or otherwise. Now day’s people eat just as a routine and to keep working, just as fuel is need for a vehicle to work. But a vehicle too has a capacity for fuel. Whereas we, human beings have no limit anymore. We keep on hogging till we can. Not even thinking how harmful it can be?
