Herbal ointments or herbal salves (which are basically the same type of herbal preparations) are made of beeswax and infused herbal oils (which can be prepared by adding dry herbs to high quality vegetable oil). Herbal ointments work best for skin care and are frequently used in herbal medicine to treat a number of skin conditions (like cuts, burns, insect bites, etc.), as well as for soothing and nourishing the skin. Herbal salves are an excellent solution for massages and nourishing dry skin.
Beeswax is a very valuable natural product used for preparing herbal ointments or herbal salves for its excellent soothing and warming qualities. It can firmly cover up your skin and create a great environment for herbs to release their therapeutic magic and powers. Vegetable oil is a great solvent which helps to deliver medicinal properties of the herbs too. And finally, you can use any sort of herbs and natural remedies for your herbal ointments which you think will have best effects on your particular skin condition. For example, heartease can be used to treat skin rushes, and chamomile can be used to treat eczema and puffy eyes.
Making herbal ointments is very easy becasue we know how to prepare infused herbal oils. Take 1 part of herbal oil and add 1/4 part of beeswax. Place into a heat-resistant ceramic or glass jar and heat on a low fire until the beeswax in your jar is melted. If you consider it necessary, you can also add some natural preservatives or such additives like vitamin E, essential oils, honey and so on. When the beeswax is completely melted, remove your jar from heat and pour your herbal ointment into a small tin or glass container. Do not forget to place a label with the date of preparation on the container. Cover it up, let it cool down a little and place to refrigerator where your herbal salve can get harden and ready to use. If properly stored in refrigerator, herbal ointments can last for several months.
