It is actually interesting: in order to receive eggs for those who suffer from allergies, what should come first, hypoallergenic hens or allergy-free eggs? I myself am not sure, but the scientists at Geelong’s Deakin University are convinced that it could be better to start with creating allergy-free eggs, and then use them for possible producing hypoallergenic chickens. The idea is really very challenging and bright because egg allergies are among the commonest types of food allergies that affect a great deal of children, from infants to teenagers. This type of food allergy can be characterized with quite severe symptoms including vomiting, nasal inflammation, hives, digestive problems, and many more.
Currently, a great deal of specialists working on creating allergy-free foods which could be in a great demand among today’s people around the globe. Experts at Geelong’s Deakin believe that it is possible to produce special allergy-free eggs by applying the following strategy. They offer ‘switching off’ the factors linked to allergens in eggs, this way starting the chain allergy-free eggs – allergy-free hens – allergy-free eggs – etc., and giving a way to receiving hypoallergenic chickens in more or less natural way, without modifying the DNA. Scientists hope to start their practical experiments shortly which would involve isolating the main four allergens in eggs (4 proteins among the 40 in egg white), and then reintroducing the proteins back to the eggs.
All theoretical parts of the experiment are almost completed, and the experts are ready to start their practical part of the study which will last approximately for three years. This way, potentially, in a decade or so we can have allergy-free eggs, as well as other allergy-free foods created by using the similar approach, on the shelves of our supermarkets. Professor Tim Doran, one of the study group leaders and a father of a kid suffering from allergies, comments on the work of his scientific group as the following: “We are not producing genetically modified chickens as part of this research. We are simply modifying the proteins within the egg whites to produce chickens which lay allergy-free eggs.”
Specialists believe that this experiment of Australian scientists will help many parents avoid serious effects of egg allergies on their kids. In particular, those kids who suffer from egg white allergies have to consume only homemade foods which can guarantee the absence of allergens and can protect kids and their families from possible complications. Sometimes the effects can be really serious and in the worst situations, children can experience anaphylactic shock which is potentially fatal. According to medical specialists, food allergies cause serious health problems for a great number of modern people, both adults and youngsters. That is why producing allergy-free eggs and allergy-free foods can assist in relieving heavy load on hospitals and other medical establishments.
