African PlantsThere is hardly possible to name any other kind of cure or treatment the world is in need more that a cure for cancer. Every day this terrible disease takes lives of thousands of people around the world, both young and aging, and the present day’s cancer epidemics is considered by many experts to be one of the hardest for the whole history of the humanity to fight against. Hundreds of scientific research groups are currently working in their labs and doing everything possible to get a clue on finding new cancer treatment options and give hope to millions of people around the world affected by this serious disease. Hopefully, very soon an effective cure will be found and the humanity will be saved from this terrible disease.

Now and then, scientists report about their new ideas and the most recent findings as to possible new cancer treatment options. Thus, just a few weeks ago, a group of researchers published the conclusions about excellent anti-cancer benefits of organic chamomile tea. According to the scientists from Ohio State University, using one-two cups of chamomile tea per day can be a safe and very effective solution for all modern women to prevent breast cancer. As it is stated in the report about the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the discovered anti-cancer benefits of chamomile tea should be attributed to a high content of apigenin, a natural substance which can interact with proteins in our body and prevent cancer cell formation. At the same time, more and more of rare medicinal plants are attracting attention of scientists who study potential of herbs and plants as possible cancer cure sources. In particular, many scientific groups are studying the properties and chemical content of some rare African plants in order to find possible anti-cancer effects of those. This week, it was reported that an expert team from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has found out that some African plants, namely Chemical CompoundsEthiopian pepper, African wild pepper, giant globe thistle, speargrass, and some others, contain a substance which has demonstrated great properties for inhibiting the development of cancer cells in human body. Despite the fact that the researchers underline the necessity of further studies to evaluate the discovered therapeutic properties of African medicinal herbs, they are convinced that the findings can bring to developing quite effective new cancer treatment type.

The scientists got interested in the fact that many of African plants have special toxic compounds serve for protection against bacterias, viruses, and even predators. This is how plants which do not have mobility or immune system can preserve themselves from their enemies. During the study, the research group examined about 100 plants and looked closely at the mentioned protective effects or plants’ resistance mechanisms.  After the preliminary research, the experts focused on studying the activities of benzophenones and other phytochemicals with are able to elude resistance mechanisms and deprive cancer cells the opportunity to get resistive to the existing treatment. During the research, three most effective models of the resistance mechanisms were examined, and Mainz scientists used cellular models of the mechanisms under examination.

The active substances present in African medicinal plants may be capable of killing off tumor cells that are resistant to more than one drug. They thus represent an excellent starting point for the development of new therapeutic treatments for cancers that do not respond to conventional chemotherapy regimens,” said the study leader, Professor Thomas Efferth, a specialist from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biochemistry. According to the scientist, for the moment the scientific group managed to find out four benzophenones with potentially very strong cytotoxic effects. Further studies are planned to investigate the issue closer and possibly come up with some new treatments for some existing types of cancer. Author Info: Hi! My name is Carla and I am a 5th year medical student at HYMS. I am interested in alternative medicine and I have done months researching the topic of herbal medicine. Besides, I like interviewing people and learning more about their experiences with one or another type of herbal treatments. I am willing to contribute to this site with my knowledge, and I would be happy to help you out to the best of my ability with any specific questions or problems related to alternative medicine.
